Common Boiler Problems: What They Mean And How We Can Fix Them

Boilers are one of those things you don’t think much about… until something goes wrong! At The Hart Heating Company, our heating engineers in Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire are often called out to help with issues that could’ve been spotted, or even prevented, with regular servicing.
Here are some of the most common boiler problems we come across, what they might mean, and how our team can help put things right.
🔧 1. You're Always Having to “Top Up” the Boiler Pressure
Sound familiar? If you’re frequently topping up your heating system with water, it’s usually a sign of an underlying issue. Quite often, it’s the pressure vessel (or more rarely, a leak).
Over time, the pressure vessel can lose its charge or develop a split. If this happens, your system can’t hold pressure properly, meaning you’ll need to keep topping it up just to keep the heating running.
👉 During a boiler service in Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire, we can check the pressure vessel and recharge it or replace it if this is the issue. That means no more pressure drops… and no more fiddling with the filling loop.
🔍 2. Flue Gas Leaks Inside the Boiler Case
This one is less obvious, but more serious. If the burner gaskets or flue duct seals inside the boiler begin to deteriorate, gases from the combustion process can leak inside the boiler casing.
Left unchecked, this can cause internal damage from condensation and in rare cases, may even risk carbon monoxide entering the room.
The good news? These kinds of issues are usually picked up during a boiler service, well before they become dangerous. That’s why staying on top of annual servicing is so important and why our engineers always carry out thorough safety checks.
❄️ 3. Frozen or Blocked Condensate Pipework
One of the most common winter boiler problems we see is a frozen condensate pipe. When the temperature drops, water inside this pipe can freeze, causing your boiler to shut down when you need it most.
Sometimes it’s down to poor installation — or just a pipe that’s too exposed to the cold. In other cases, the condensate trap inside the boiler may be blocked with debris, preventing proper drainage.
During a Hart Heating boiler service, we’ll check that your condensate system is clear and correctly installed. And if it needs improving, we’ll let you know the best way to avoid future freezing issues.
